Setting Up & Activating Your Technician Marketplace Profile
Complete your technician marketplace profile, meet the activation requirements, and go live for marketplace work — while keeping your private details private.
What the technician marketplace profile is
Your technician marketplace profile is how clients and technician-network owners find and match with you for work. When you activate your technician marketplace profile, you become visible to clients in the app and eligible to be matched to open marketplace tickets.
This is separate from your client marketplace profile — the profile your company uses to post jobs to the marketplace. Many tenants use both; some use only one. This guide covers the technician side only.
Open it from the sidebar: My Tech Profile (or your employee resource record → Marketplace Profile tab).
What's public vs. private (read this first)
It's natural to worry about exposing personal info. Here's exactly what is and isn't shared:
Visible to clients in the marketplace: your first name, last initial, city/state, skills, the names of your licenses and certifications, and insurance status.
Kept private until a site visit is assigned/accepted: your full street address and ZIP (only city/state show until a job is accepted), and your contact details — name, email, and phone are only revealed to a client once a site visit is assigned to you.
Never shared with anyone outside your company: the actual license/certificate documents you upload and your license numbers. Clients see the credential's name only — never the document.
Never shown unless you turn on Public Internet Visibility (a separate, off-by-default switch — covered below).
Step 1 — Complete the requirements to be active
The first card on the tab is Technician Marketplace Status. Its title carries an Active or Inactive badge, and the Marketplace Profile tab itself shows the same badge in the side menu, so you can see your status the moment you open your profile. If you're already active, the card opens folded up; click its title (or the arrow on the right) to open it. If you're not active yet, it opens fully.
Inside it, the Requirements to be active checklist shows everything needed before you can activate. Each item is either Required (amber) or Optional, and turns green when met. When an item takes you to another tab or page (the W-9, insurance, a login), a blue bar at the top offers a way back, and saving that item brings you straight back to the checklist.
Tenant W-9 on file (required) — you, as an individual, or your business needs a W-9 on record to confirm your tax details before marketplace work. Marketplace tax reporting (1099-K) is handled by Stripe — Service Envoy does not issue tax forms. (International tenants: shown as optional — a U.S. W-9 doesn't apply; use a W-8BEN out of band if a client requests tax documentation.)
Marketplace contact complete (required) — the contact shared with a client once a site visit is assigned. It needs a first name, last name, email and mobile number; if any are missing, the checklist names them. Fix them with Edit selected contact in the Marketplace Contact card (right below the Status card), or on the Contacts tab. Add new contact adds another one without leaving the page. Choose it in the Marketplace Contact card even if it's your only contact: picking it confirms the details from sign-up are the ones clients should see. The checklist's Choose contact link scrolls you to that card. A profile that was already active keeps sharing its one contact until it's switched off and on again.
Marketplace address selected (required) — your service location. Only city/state are public; the full address is revealed only after a job is accepted. Choose it in the Marketplace Address card (below Marketplace Contact) even if it's your only address, to confirm it's the one to use; the checklist's Choose address link scrolls you there. The card also has Edit selected address and Add new address buttons, or use the Addresses tab.
Verified insurance certificate (optional but recommended) — clients can filter for techs with verified insurance, so uploading yours helps you win work.
Has their own login (required): a technician signs in to accept work, check in and check out, so an employee record can't be activated until it has its own login. If it's missing, click Create login on the checklist. It opens Admin → Users with that employee already picked: choose the Technician role and save. Your own profile always meets this step.
Independent-contractor acknowledgement (required) — you'll be prompted to sign this automatically the moment you click Activate. It must be re-signed after each deactivation. This ensures that you understand that this platform provides 1099 contract work and you are not an employee of the platform or the client providing site visit work.
Stripe payouts (optional) — connect a bank via Stripe so marketplace earnings can be paid out. Accepted jobs still complete without it, but payouts are held until it's set up. (If you're an employee technician, payouts route through your company's central account — no setup needed from you.)
When all required items are green, you'll see a "Ready to activate" badge on the checklist, and the activation panel below it turns green.
Employee technicians: you fill in your own skills, tools, licenses & certifications, bio and repair types. The activation steps (marketplace contact and address, minimum rate, notification distance, visibility, the contractor agreement) and the activation switch are handled by your company's Owner, Admin or Accounting user. A Project Manager can see every employee's tab and manages their own, activation included.
Step 2 — Fill out your profile
These make you more attractive to clients (and a couple feed the public profile if you enable it):
Minimum Hourly Rate — the lowest rate you'll accept; helps match you to appropriately-priced work.
Max Distance for Available Work Notifications — how far from your marketplace address a job can be and still reach you. Pick a distance under Notify me about jobs within (or Any distance). You're notified about posted work within it, and clients can offer you jobs within it. Farther jobs won't notify you and won't put you on a client's Offer list. Alerts for posted work also stop at 200 miles, even with a larger setting or Any distance. Distance is measured in a straight line between ZIP codes, not by road. You can still find farther jobs in Available Work, and a client can still send you one directly with Direct Route (first-to-accept race). Tip: set it to the farthest you'd realistically travel.
Professional Bio — a short summary of your experience.
Skills: what you can do. Clients filter on these. Add them with Manage Skills. Can't find a skill? Click Can't find it? Suggest a skill in that window. Service Envoy reviews every suggestion, and an approved skill is added to the list for everyone, so you can then add it to your profile.
Tools & equipment: pick from the shared list with Manage Tools. Lists are in A to Z order. Can't find a tool? Click Can't find it? Suggest a tool next to the search box. Approved tools are added to the list for everyone.
Repair Types — list the repair types you do and the ones you don't do. A repair type can only be in one list: adding it to one takes it off the other, and a type you leave out of both just isn't stated. Clients see both lists on your public profile. You won't get new-work alerts for repair types on your don't do list — that work still shows on Available Work if you want it.
Licenses & Certifications — your formal credentials, with the actual documents on file (covered in detail next).
Reminders to finish your profile. If your marketplace profile is active — or a company has you in its Private Network — and it doesn't list any skills or any tools, we'll email you a reminder about once a week (your company's notification email is copied), up to four times. They stop as soon as your profile lists your skills and tools, or when you click Stop these reminders in the email. A company that works with you, or the Service Envoy team, may also send you a one-off request to complete your profile.
Licenses & Certifications
Two cards on the profile tab let you list your formal credentials — Licenses (trade and state licenses, like a California C-7 or a state fire alarm license) and Certifications (industry certs like BICSI, NICET, CompTIA, fiber, AV, and manufacturer certifications). Clients reviewing your profile see the credential names, which helps you stand out and win work that requires specific qualifications.
To add one:
Click Manage Licenses or Manage Certifications on the matching card.
Pick the type from the dropdown — it's searchable, so just start typing (for example "NICET" or "fiber") to filter the list. If yours isn't there, choose Other (custom)… and type the name.
Optionally add the issuing organization, state (for state licenses), license/cert number, and issued/expiration dates.
Upload the actual document — a PDF or a photo of the card/certificate.
Click Add.
Who sees what: the credential's name (plus issuing organization and state) shows on your marketplace profile and, if enabled, your public profile. The uploaded document and your license number never leave your company — clients, other companies, and the public cannot open or download them under any circumstances. Think of it as the difference between the framed certificate on the wall and the wallet card in your pocket: everyone can read the wall, only your company holds the card.
Expiration handling: when a credential's expiration date passes, it automatically stops displaying to clients and on your public profile — no action needed. Inside your company it stays on the list with a red Expired badge so you know to renew it and update the record.
Technicians manage their own: you can add, upload, and remove your own licenses and certifications, along with your skills, tools, bio and repair types. Owners, Admins and Accounting users can also manage them for any technician.
Step 3 — Activate your technician marketplace profile
Activation happens in the panel at the bottom of the Technician Marketplace Status card. What you see there depends on where you are in setup:
Requirements still outstanding — the panel is grey, the button is disabled, and it tells you how many required items are left (for example, "2 required items left — the activate button turns on once they're done."). Finish those first; the button switches on by itself.
Ready to go — the panel turns green and reads "You're ready — activate your technician profile." Click the green Activate My Technician Profile button.
Signing the acknowledgement — if you haven't signed the independent-contractor acknowledgement yet, clicking Activate opens it. Review and sign to continue; activation completes right after.
Once active — the panel is replaced by a green Active badge and the message "Active — visible to clients and accepting jobs." You're now visible to clients and can be matched to open tickets.
Admins activating on behalf of a technician: the wording changes to "Ready — activate this technician's profile" and Activate Technician Profile, and you'll sign the acknowledgement as your company's authorized signer.
International tenants: the public marketplace is U.S.-only, so the panel explains this instead of offering a button. You're still discoverable through technician-network invitations from U.S. clients — no marketplace activation needed.
Deactivating is always allowed. Once you're active, the panel becomes a simple on/off switch — turn it off to deactivate. Note that deactivating resets the independent-contractor acknowledgement, so you'll sign it again next time you activate — by design, so you're reminded of your 1099 status each time you rejoin.

Your Marketplace Performance card
Once you have at least one completed marketplace site visit, a measured arrival, or a no-show on record, a Marketplace Performance card appears on the profile tab, below the Status, Contact and Address cards. It shows three numbers:
Visits completed — how many marketplace site visits you've finished.
On-time arrival — the percentage of measured visits where you arrived on time. A prior site running over counts as on-time — it never lowers your rate.
No-shows — the number of site visits you accepted and never arrived at. This is the same number clients see when they look at your marketplace profile, so there are no surprises. It counts marketplace site visits only: a no-show on a company's Private Network work is kept between you and that company and never appears on your public profile. A clean record shows nothing to clients; any count above zero shows as a red badge.
How a no-show gets recorded: if you haven't checked in 60 minutes after a fixed start time (or by the end of a variable arrival window), Service Envoy records a no-show automatically. For a fixed start time the client is alerted 15 minutes after it; inside a variable arrival window you're on time, so nothing is sent until the window ends. The client can record a no-show by hand only once that same deadline has passed — never earlier, only against the technician actually assigned, and never once you've logged an onsite time. Either way you're notified by email and in the app, including any note the client added.
Clearing one: if you turn up after the mark was recorded, simply check in — the no-show is cleared automatically (the late arrival still counts on your On-time number). The client can also clear it from the site visit. If you believe a no-show was recorded in error, contact Service Envoy support (see Getting Help & Support) with the site visit — support can review and clear it. A no-show never cancels or unassigns the site visit by itself; that stays the client's call.
Clients who have favorited you
When a company saves you as a favorite, clients looking at your marketplace profile — and anyone viewing your public profile, if you've turned it on — see a count of how many companies have done it, for example Favorite of 3 clients. It appears alongside your other profile badges, and only once at least one company has favorited you. It isn't shown on your own My Tech Profile tab.
It is a count and nothing more. You are never shown which companies, and neither is anyone else. How a company rates the technicians it works with is private to that company's own team, and that does not change because the number is published.
Only a genuine favorite is counted. A company can also mark you as vetted, as having an application in progress, or as not a match — none of those are counted here, in either direction. Nothing a company can mark will ever lower this number or show as a negative on your profile.
There is nothing to switch on and nothing you can edit. The count follows the work: companies favorite the technicians they want back.
Your Marketplace Fee card
Below your performance numbers, the Marketplace Fee card shows what Service Envoy keeps from your marketplace earnings — your labor pay plus travel pay. The standard fee is 10%, and the grey Current fee badge always shows the rate you're actually on right now.
Two things can lower it, and neither takes you below the 5% floor:
An early-adopter promo code. If one is being offered, a box appears on the card where you can enter it. The reduced rate holds for as long as your technician marketplace profile stays active — deactivating permanently forfeits it, and reactivating does not bring it back.
Refer & Earn. Every company your company refers that goes on to activate a marketplace profile cuts your fee by a permanent 1%. While the program is open, a green block at the bottom of the card shows your progress and a Get my referral link button that takes you straight there. If part of your current rate came from referrals, the card says so next to the badge — for example, "Includes 2% earned from Refer & Earn." See the Refer & Earn article for the full rules.
Refer & Earn is run at the company level, so that green block is shown to Owners and back-office users. If you're an employee technician you won't see it — your company's admins manage referrals — but any reduction they earn lowers the fee on your marketplace earnings too.
Optional — Public Internet Visibility
This is a separate switch from activation, and it's off by default.
When on, your profile becomes a shareable web page that anyone on the internet can view without logging in — exposing your photo, bio, skills, tools, license and certification names, and insurance status. You'll get a confirmation before it goes live, plus Copy Link and View Public Profile buttons.
Leave it off if you only want to be discoverable to clients inside the app. Turn it on if you want a public, linkable profile you can share. You can turn it back off anytime to remove public access.
Your contact information and address are never shared publicly. Only your city and state. Your license/certificate documents and numbers are never shared publicly either — only the credential names.
Hiding setup reminders (client-only tenants)
If your company signed up to use the marketplace as a client only — posting jobs, not supplying technicians — you don't need to finish technician marketplace setup. Service Envoy may still show a violet finish setup banner at the top of the app after you've opened the marketplace profile tab or started filling it in.
Owners can hide that nag in one click:
From the banner: click Not a marketplace tech — hide this. The banner disappears immediately.
From the profile tab: on My Tech Profile, in the Technician Marketplace Status card (while you're still not active), look below the activation panel for Not setting this person up for the marketplace? and turn on Hide the finish-setup banner and reminder emails for my profile.
Either action:
Stops the in-app reminder banner for your technician profile.
Stops weekly reminder emails about unfinished technician setup.
Skips the optional Set up your technician marketplace profile item on the dashboard onboarding checklist (if it was showing).
You can turn reminders back on anytime from the same switch on the profile tab. Hiding reminders does not activate your profile — it only stops the nudges.
Reminders apply to the Owner's own technician profile, not every employee under your company.
FAQ
Do clients see my phone number or home address when I activate?
No. Contact details are revealed only when a site visit is assigned to you, and your full address only after a job is accepted. Until then, just city/state show.
Can clients see my actual license or certificate documents?
No — never. Clients (and the public, if you've enabled public visibility) see only the credential's name, issuing organization, and state. The uploaded document and your license number stay inside your company, full stop.
What happens when one of my certifications expires?
It automatically stops showing to clients and on your public profile. Your company still sees it internally with an Expired badge — update the expiration date (or re-add it with the new document) after you renew.
Why is the Activate button greyed out?
A required checklist item isn't met yet — the activation panel tells you how many are left, and the badge on Requirements to be active shows the same. Resolve those (W-9, contact, address) and the button turns green on its own. If you're an employee technician, activation is handled by your company's Owner, Admin or Accounting user instead.
Why can't I change my settings?
Until your marketplace profile is active, the settings below your marketplace contact and address are locked, with the note Activate your profile to edit these settings. Set your marketplace contact and address, then turn your profile on under Technician Marketplace Status. If you're on a company's Private Network, nothing is locked: that company's routing uses these settings even with the marketplace off.
How does Max Distance for Available Work Notifications work?
It's how far from your marketplace address a job can be and still reach you. When a client posts work to all marketplace techs, you're notified only if the job is within it. When a client uses Offer mode, Service Envoy compares the job's location to your marketplace address — if it's farther than your setting, you're left off their list and won't get that Offer notification. That keeps far jobs from flooding your inbox. Available Work still shows any visit you've already been sent (including intentional Direct Route / race invites, which can override your setting). Choose Any distance to hear about work at any distance (alerts for posted work still stop at 200 miles). The limit only applies when both your marketplace address and the job site have a valid location on file.
There's a No-show on my profile — how do I get it removed?
If you did arrive, check in on the site visit — that clears it automatically. If the mark is wrong, contact Service Envoy support with the site visit; support can review and clear it. The client who posted the visit can also clear it on their side.
A client has gone quiet on a site visit I'm assigned to. What can I do?
Open the site visit and use Tech Actions → Escalate to Service Envoy. Pick a reason, describe what's happened, and support steps in. This is for marketplace site visits; on a Private Network visit, contact the company that sent it. If your submitted work has waited 7 days for the client's approval (time spent on deliverables the client marked missing or incomplete doesn't count), use Escalate Overdue Approval in the same menu. See Escalating a Site Visit to Service Envoy.
Is insurance required?
No, but it's strongly recommended — clients can filter for insured techs.
Do I have to set up Stripe payouts to activate?
No. You can activate and accept work without it; earnings are just held until payouts are connected. (Employee techs don't set this up at all.)
Will turning on Public Internet Visibility happen by accident?
No — it's off by default and shows a confirmation before going live.
We only want to post work as a client — do we have to finish technician setup?
No. Use Not a marketplace tech — hide this on the violet banner, or the hide-reminders switch on the profile tab. Your client marketplace profile setup (on My Client Profile) is completely separate.
I hid reminders by mistake — how do I get them back?
Go to My Tech Profile → Technician Marketplace Status card → turn off the hide-reminders switch.
How do I lower my marketplace fee?
Refer other companies to Service Envoy — each one that signs up and activates a marketplace profile permanently drops your fee by 1%, down to a 5% floor. Open My Tech Profile → Marketplace Fee card → Get my referral link, or go to the Refer & Earn page. If an early-adopter promo code is being offered, the same card has a box to redeem it.
If I deactivate my profile, do I lose my referral reduction?
No. Reductions earned through Refer & Earn are permanent and belong to your company — deactivating doesn't touch them. That's different from an early-adopter promo code, which is forfeited permanently the moment the profile is deactivated.
